Update On Our Events

Posted by on November 1, 2021 in News | Comments Off on Update On Our Events

Last Wednesday’s talk by the Lord Mayor of Brunswick, Herr Ulrich Markurth, was finally able to take place on the BRLSI Zoom platform.  The meeting was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Bath, Councillor Dr Yukteshwar Kumar, (the Mayor of Bath was indisposed) and both mayors gave some opening remarks to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of our twinning agreement, before Mayor Markurth developed the evening’s theme of “Urban Development in Braunschweig”.  The talk was well attended by members of the BBTA, Bath German Society, members of the Anglo-German Association (DEG) in Brunswick, other Brunswick ex-pats, members of the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association and of the Cheltenham-Göttingen Association, and officials of B&NES.  We are very grateful to our speakers and to the audience for making this a memorable evening. The next event we have to look forward to is Jürgen Kumlehn reading from his book “Jewish Families in Wolfenbüttel”.  This will take place on Thursday, 4th November at 19.00 UK time and is organised by the DEG. If you are interested in joining us, please contact BBTA18@hotmail.com for further...

Talk by Lord Mayor of Brunswick on 27th October

Posted by on October 22, 2021 in News | Comments Off on Talk by Lord Mayor of Brunswick on 27th October

The committee of BBTA and the staff in the Mayor’s office were very disappointed that the civic visit of the Lord Mayor of Brunswick has now been cancelled, as a result of the continuing high incidence of Covid cases in this area.  The good news, however, is that he will still give his talk (in German) on “Urban Development in Braunschweig” via Zoom on 27th October, at a meeting also attended by the Mayor of Bath.  The evening is a result of co-operation between Bath German Society, the BBTA and Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, from whom details on registering for the talk are available.  Many thanks to everyone involved in these...

BBTA Committee News

Posted by on September 22, 2021 in News | Comments Off on BBTA Committee News

The committee met again on 17th September to discuss the progress on the arrangements for the civic visit of Lord Mayor Markurth and his colleagues.  We hope that we will be able to offer them a varied programme of events, including some sight-seeing and meetings with local councillors and B&NES officers.  Bath German Society will also host an open meeting at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, when the Lord Mayor will talk about urban development in Brunswick.  Unfortunately we have had to cancel our plans for a Twinning Stall at Bath Christmas Market this year, as the Market will be much reduced in size. The next committee meeting will take place on 15th October. Informal meetings with the Anglo-German Society of Brunswick continue on a regular basis;  these are usually in the form of a book club, but we also have the opportunity to discuss other matters such as the current political landscape in Germany.  We also maintain our contacts with the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association and the Bristol-Hannover Council.  Thank goodness for...

Stephen Bird ‘Mr Heritage’ to Retire

Posted by on August 8, 2021 in News | Comments Off on Stephen Bird ‘Mr Heritage’ to Retire

Many of the DEG members will have met Stephen Bird when visiting the Roman Baths, Pump Room and the Fashion Museum. Treve (the late) & Manfred Erdmenger spoke of meeting with him each & every visit, having tea/coffee and Bath Buns in the Pump Room. Where incidentally Tim Landsmann celebrated his 13th birthday in 2015!! However the sampling of the Bath Water was not so popular!! From the Bath Newseum website: One of the nicest and most approachable of people – working for Bath and North East Somerset – is preparing to retire at the end of September. He’s Stephen Bird who – as Head of Heritage Services – has helped power the local tourist economy for many years. He’s overseen the continual commercial and historical development of the Roman Baths, Pump Room and Fashion Museum and – hopefully – will be able to witness the opening of the new World Heritage Centre in York Street before he leaves. That’s been a ten year ‘marathon’ for him that started when he showed the Heritage Lottery Fund officer around the old city laundry site in 2011Bath...

New BBTA Committee

Posted by on August 7, 2021 in News | Comments Off on New BBTA Committee

The newly elected committee met on 30th July, with the Mayor of Bath, Cllr June Player, as the guest of honour. All committee members have a long standing interest in twinning, and we hope to build on these ties in the coming year. In particular, the online links developed in the past year have proved very successful in maintaining friendships in spite of geographical distances. As for in person activities, we are hoping to welcome a civic delegation from Brunswick in October, and to have a German presence at Bath’s Christmas Market. The Association welcomes new members, who we hope will also attend committee meetings and take part in other activities. Our next meeting will be on 3rd September 2021, via...
