A song long associated with Ireland may be formally honoured in Bath for the first time as an Irishman launches a campaign to pay tribute to its lyricist.

The words to Danny Boy were written in Bath more than 100 years ago by barrister Frederick Weatherly, but the song’s connection to the city has never been acknowledged, other than a plaque at his former house in Edward Street.

A prolific writer of prose, poetry and song, Weatherly was born in Portishead in 1848 and spent most of his adult life in Bath.

He wrote more than 3,000 tunes during his lifetime, including The Holy City, Roses of Picardy, Up from Somerset and The Old Brigade.
